Destinations for the first week.
John met us at the airport, and took us to where the Carolina was moored, which was at Auke Bay north of Juneau. Here was our first taste of Alaskan scenery
The first week we had a lot of rain. I suppose if you are going to a rain forest you should expect some rain, but we didn't think we would see this much cool and rainy weather. From what John said, the weather during may was much nicer, which is the opposite of what he expected. Because of the bad weather, we did not get to sail any during the first week. We spent the whole time motoring. That did not detract from the scenery. As we were leaving Auke Bay a whale breached about ten or twenty feet from the boat. It happened so fast I did not have time to take a picture. The first day we went Taku Inlet. We only stopped there because we could not make to to Tracy/Endicott arm that night. The second day, we went to an anchorage called Hobart bay, which is just inside Tracy Arm. The third we went down Tracy Arm to the glacier at then end. We couldn't take Carolina all the way to the face of the glacier because of all of the bergies, so Sharon and I took the skiff while John waited with Carolina. We worked our way back to anchor at the same place for the next night. The third day, we went down Endicott Arm to Fords' Terror where we anchored. The entrance to Fords Terror is only passable during high slack tide. This is because there is one passage where it is only a couple of fathoms deep. Because of this once we were in we could not get out until high tide the next day at 2:00. We then spent the night again at Holkum Bay. We worked our way back to Jueneau in the rain, and didn't see much except a bunch of cruise ships. Back to Alaska Main Back to Allen's Home Page
